Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
The Olive Street Church of Christ in Mexico, Missouri (population 12,000), is again looking for financial help to build a new place of worship. Our current building is one of the oldest in town; there is only one bathroom, and it is in the basement down a long flight of steps. Our auditorium can only be reached by climbing four steps, which makes our entire building inaccessible to people who can’t climb steps. At a seminar in our building, a visitor from the community decided not to stay because she didn’t have bathroom access.
We have purchased two lots on the west side of town with highway frontage. However, that purchase has depleted our building fund. We sent a letter last fall to a limited number of congregations and individuals requesting financial assistance for this project. We raised about $6,500 from generous individual and congregational donations, bringing our building fund to about $36,700. With this mailing we are expanding the number of congregations being contacted. We have about 25 in attendance on Sunday mornings, and are the only Church of Christ in Audrain County, Missouri (population about 26,000). We pay the salary of our full-time preacher Dennis Steele. Since our current building is paid for, we don’t have a mortgage payment. However, we do have other ongoing expenses (such as insurance, utilities, maintenance, Bible class material, and contributions to evangelistic efforts). We have dedicated our 5th Sunday contributions to the building fund.
Based on our current income, we cannot begin making payments on a loan to build a modest building and continue to pay our preacher. We believe that preaching Gods Word is more important than a building. Therefore, we will not remove our preacher to pay for a new church building. The best alternative is to seek additional outside support.
